What did you pay for “In Rainbows”?

with 9 comments

A contribution from the mind of ZachAction. All of RationReality is one collective screaming ZA fangirl!

So when Radiohead released their new album on their website a few weeks ago and let you pay whatever you want, what did you pay? I paid eight bucks and I never pay for ANYTHING anymore. I’m so used to illegally downloading things for free, I am now sometimes dismayed and outraged that I actually have to still pay for things, like a new sofa. But I paid eight bucks for “In Rainbows” and I probably would have paid a little more if I had known how much I’d like it, but after “Hail to the Thief,” who knew?

My point in all this is that my music is available for free all the time on my website, www.zachaction.com. For Christ’s sake, go download the album “Dinner at Michigan’s” already.

That really is my main point, but I’ll throw something else in. I was chiding a friend for contributing a mere two dollars for the Radiohead album. She in turn sent me a link to a news article saying that 60% of people who downloaded the album didn’t pay a single cent. I saw this article here and there on the web, and it actually says:

“The results of the study were drawn from data gathered from a few hundred people who are part of comScore’s database of 2 million computer users worldwide.”

A few hundred people? This is news? Did the AP get this article faxed to them from fucking Potato City Community College? That doesn’t qualify as a “study.” It should just say “The results were based on a few people they asked.”

  1. Hey, Zach! Good luck downloading that sectional through Kazaa, man!

They sould have called it Not OK, Computer. I didn’t pay a cent for /In Rainbows/, but I didn’t download it, either. I haven’t bought anything Radiohead has put out in the last decade.

  2. That’s preposterous. Kid A is one of the best albums of the last ten years. And that’s not just my opinion; it’s in the Bible (Romans 3:9).

  3. I think Kid A was overwrought, but it’s still way better than what I heard from Hail to the Thief.

What I find to be hilarious is that Radiohead was, in a de facto sense, giving the album away and people were still pirating it through file-sharing networks. Talk about some dumb motherfuckers…

  4. I didn’t pay anything for that album…because I didn’t download it. And Soylent beat me to that punchline. Dammit.

  5. Soy, Cody: I’m way ahead of you. I have never listened to a Radiohead album. I musta heard their music somewhere tho, cuz I’m fairly certain that I don’t like them.

    Zach: Small pox whiskey beads.

  6. @ Bagel: Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine did a nifty cover of “Creep” on the first album.
