IIRC they were one of the first small animals domesticated by humans, probably used for hunting originally. The original species that they were bred down from is extinct, and nobody is really sure what it was. I think. On the Gulf Coast (3rd Coast) it's the Japanese tourists doing the dirty work. I had a friend in college who bred them and told me they were rodents because their teeth kept growing throughout their lives. I guess he was setting me up to look like an idiot, or he was a dumbass.
