  2. @Stona: The “click for larger” should give you a screenfull of comic. Try clicking it, then holding your mouse over it, see if a little resize box pops up in the right hand corner. Microsoft thinks it’s helping by sizing things for you.

  3. Oh—you are so smart….thanks….

  4. That’s why they made me head bitch!

  5. So, now that you’ve been able to read the text, what did you think?

  6. Ha! Pretty funny. Great set-up!

Oh,yeah–Harry Potter IS evil, but in the sense that it’s a huge, exploitative multinational media enterprise that uses predatory marketing techniques to sucker kids into “riddikkulus” merchandising and product tie-ins. The only difference between HP and, say, Shrek is the redemptive effect of encouraging kids to read, though I feel this is more an afterthought to Bloomsbury, Scholastic and Warner Brothers.

Actually Rowling has fought constanly to minimize the marketing spin offs of the series.
Compared to comparble enterprizes they have been downright restrained.

The book have also created a massive upswing in adolescent reading…how can you begrudge them creating products that people can choose to buy, or not?

  8. My previous job came with the glamorous title Director of Childrens Literature. (The indie bookstore paid us with resume fodder more than negotiable paper).

I quickly learned that the best books for kids were any that a kid would actually read.
The stinky little brats couldn’t get enough junk-lit.
I had been a book snob before that job experience, but I’ve loosened up. If it gets them to turn off the tv and video games, and doesn’t scar them for life, then it’s quality literature.

  9. You know, it’s funny. I first read Harry Potter out of sheer fucking desperation.

I’d bought a big box of books at a thrift store. Big box, like 30-40 books, that I think had come from an estate. I didn’t get to look through the books, but was told that they contained sci-fi / fantasy / techno-thrillers, so said what the hell. I laid down my one dollar and took ‘em home.

It was a mixed bag of books. Some were good, some weren’t. After I read through all of them and had nothing left to read, I just left Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone sitting there for months, until I grew utterly desperate for something to read.

Well, four days later, I was finishing book 6. :P
